This class is an informative and fun way to learn new techniques of surface decoration on unfired clay, bisque-ware and glazed ceramics.

The session gives students an opportunity to try the following techniques:

 - Silk screen printing with slip and underglaze on clay slabs for hand building and press moulding and tiles.

 - The use of enamel decals for glazed ceramics (students can use our own glazed tiles or bring their own glazed pieces to be embellished)

 - Powder mono-printing, where we use potter’s tissue to transfer drawn images onto clay or fired bisque using oxides and underglaze

 - Mono-printing with plaster, where students can paint slip onto plaster slabs or even carve into plaster to print images onto wet clay 

Each technique will be clearly demonstrated and students will be given the opportunity to try each method. 

This course is ideal for those who have a basic knowledge of ceramics and would like to expand their skill base for future use in the studio. All materials will be provided.

If students want to print on their own existing work, please message us to ensure the pieces will be suitable for the processes offered.

Knitter's Cottage

A four week course (two hours per session) for people who want to learn the possibilities of clay. Each two hour evening class will be spent learning varieties of hand building techniques as well as surface decorations and ways to interpret ideas into three dimensional forms.

Week one will be spent learning a variety of techniques - pinch-pots, coil building and slab-building. Learners will then adapt these techniques over the following three weeks to create ceramic work from their own ideas. From pot making to sculpture, learners will be encouraged to use their imagination and interests to make work that can be decorated with, slips, underglazes, oxides and/or glazes.

 Classes are for a maximum of five people, ensuring everyone has support in a friendly and fun environment. 
 Prices include all basic materials and firings (which will include an initial bisque firing and a glaze firing). You can purchase additional specialist glazes upon request.

All abilities welcome.

I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed weeknight ceramics classes @ studio1ceramics.
It is so fulfilling to have some creative downtime during the week and Martha is so amazing at helping you bring your ideas to life. I am going to join this class again and probably will continue going for the foreseeable future!!!!

Studio 1 is a really cute, super relaxed and welcoming space for a weekly check-in to escape busy city life.
Martha is warm and whitty and has all the fruit teas you can dream of.

I had a really good time at the pottery Christmas Decorations and Gift Making class in December. Martha was very nice and friendly. We made a number of personalised gifts, including things to hang on Christmas trees, bowls, and painted baubles. I collected the items yesterday after the glazing and they came out really well. Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed this day course as Martha gave us all hints and tips throughout the day as we progressed with our mini projects. The fact that we all managed to underglaze / slip our creations by the end of the day made it really satisfying And the lunch was delicious :) I will definitely be back.

Ceramics Taster Session

I came with my two sons who are 7 and 3.  My oldest is very proud of his Cheetah and his Eagle and he'd taken it to school for 'show and tell' and he's got some lovely feedback from his classmates.
 I'm quite happy with my plant pot, so is the Aloe Vera which now resides. 
Martha was great with the kids, definitely would go again for a family session.

This taster session was the perfect course! It was the right amount of time and the right side. I felt I got a really good introduction to the techniques used, the types of clay, the different tools and what they can be used for as well as a taster into how to decorate the pots. Lovely small class, friendly and relaxing

I booked a private lesson for myself, my partner, and his parents and we had a wonderful time. Martha was patient, instructive, and kind, and we managed to make quite a few items (cups, jars, pots...) that day, and it was really fun to think about what we would like to make and see the items come to life! We left the class feeling happy and relaxed, and excited to pick up our fired items in 2 weeks time. The finished items turned out so well and has brought all of us so much joy. Thank you Martha for such a lovely experience.

Three of us went for a 2-hour taster class and had so much fun! I'd recommend this class to anyone who wants to get their hands dirty and play with clay. We'll be booking more sessions with Martha in the future :)
